September 9, 2009
Dear Colleagues and Members of DANEIS,
You are invited to the Stoneleigh-Burnham Public Speaking Tournament. Our tournament will be held on Sunday, September 27, and will focus on three speaking genres. Each school may bring one, two, three, four, or five speakers, and each speaker should be prepared to speak in each (all) of the following categories:
1. Impromptu (mandatory)
2. Interpretive Reading (mandatory)
3. After-Dinner or Persuasive Speaking (choose one)
Speakers and their coaches should arrive between 10:30 am-11:15 am. Stoneleigh-Burnham's famous brunch will be served from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Brunch will be the only food served during the day. Event guidelines are linked on the right column and should answer all other questions. Each school is expected to bring one judge.
There will be a final round in Impromptu and After-Dinner Speaking. Time restraints preclude a final round in Interpretive Reading and Persuasive Speaking. First, second, and third place will be awarded in each of four categories. An overall tournament winner will be named. Please read your event guidelines carefully and remember that all After-Dinner and Persuasive speeches must be original. A speaker may use notes in these two categories, but these are limited to one index card, both sides.
We are confident that the speaking will be of high caliber and that everyone will enjoy the day from beginning to end. As usual, the SBS Octet will entertain during the tabulation of results. Please feel free to offer suggestions for improvement upon your departure, or later by letter or phone.
Sincerely,
